How to Deal With Competition with Your Small Business

I am a member of a Facebook Group called the Rising Tide Society. The whole mission of the group is community over competition, the name comes from the JFK quote, “a rising tide lifts all boats.” I love this way of thinking. As small business owners, it is easy to compare yourself to other entrepreneurs. Her following is bigger, she gets more likes than i do, she gets more comments than I do. Don’t let jealousy steal your joy or lesson your achievements. My mom always told me that, “being jealous was like drinking poison and hoping the other person dies.” Be proud of where you are and keep your eye on where you want to go.

Be true to yourself & you will stand apart. No one has your exact brand voicebecause no one has had the exact experiences that you’ve had. Someone could deliver the SAME message as you, but it may not resonate the SAME way. Marie Forleo had a great example of this. Marie’s boyfriend had been talking to her about juicing for years. It wasn’t until Marie saw a video made by a health coach about juicing that Marie decided to buy a juicer. It took the health coach’s message and brand voice to convince Marie to take action and change her eating habits. The way that you deliver information to someone could be what makes a message “click”.

Cheer on your “competition”, like their Instagram photo, buy from their boutique. Create a spirit of community & you’ll not only feel better about yourself but you may even receive the same support back. “A flower doesn’t think of competing with the next flower, it just blooms.”
